Integrated nuclear fuel cycle
Nuclearelectrica has realized an integrated nuclear fuel cycle , an essential project for ensuring energy autonomy and security in the supply of raw materials necessary for the operation of nuclear reactors. This integrated cycle represents a strategic element for the long-term sustainability of nuclear energy production in Romania.
Components of the Integrated Nuclear Fuel Cycle
-
Pitesti Nuclear Fuel Plant (FCN Pitesti) : This produces nuclear fuel bundles used in the CANDU reactors at Cernavodă. The plant has the capacity to produce nuclear fuel based on uranium dioxide (UO2), which ensures the continuous operation of nuclear power plants.
-
Uranium concentrate processing at Feldioara : A significant step was the acquisition of a uranium concentrate processing line at the Feldioara Branch. Through this investment, Nuclearelectrica completed the entire production chain, from the extraction of the raw material (uranium concentrate) to the production of nuclear fuel used in reactors.
-
Uranium extraction and processing : By acquiring the Feldioara facility, the company secured direct access to uranium processing, thus reducing dependence on external suppliers and ensuring greater control over fuel costs and quality.
Development stages and goals
The integrated cycle development project was initiated to support the objectives of the expansion and retrofitting of Unit 1 at Cernavodă, as well as the development of Units 3 and 4. It allows the company to operate efficiently and autonomously, contributing to improving the competitiveness of the nuclear industry from Romania.
Benefits of the Integrated Cycle
- Energy security : By fully integrating the nuclear fuel production process, Nuclearelectrica ensures the continuity of the plants’ operation, reducing the dependence on international suppliers.
- Cost control : The ability to manage the entire production chain leads to long-term cost optimization, especially in the context of nuclear infrastructure expansion and modernization plans.
- Sustainability and innovation : Nuclearelectrica plays a central role in the transition to a clean and sustainable energy, contributing significantly to Romania’s objectives regarding the reduction of CO2 emissions and national energy security.
This project strengthens Romania’s position as a regional leader in the field of nuclear energy and underlines Nuclearelectrica’s commitment to the long-term development of the nuclear industry.
